The EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)

The EYFS is a framework that applies to childminders, schools and nurseries
who provide care and education for children up until the end of the Reception
year.

Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives.  I
fully embrace the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the role that it plays in
laying secure foundations for future learning and development.

The EYFS sets out the early learning goals (the knowledge, skills and
understanding which young children should have acquired by the time they
start Year 1) and requires that practitioners observe and record children's
progress against 6 areas of learning and development, and plan activities that
develop their skills further.

The six areas are:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
Communication, Language and Literacy (CLL)
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (PSRN)
Knowledge and understanding of the World (KUW)
Physical Development (PD)
Creative Development (CD)

I deliver all the areas through planned, purposeful play, with a balance of
adult-led and child-initiated activities.
The EYFS is based on 4 Principles

The Unique Child: Every child is a
competent learner from birth who
can be resilient, capable, confident
and self-assured.
Positive relationships: Children
learn to be strong and independent
from a base of loving and secure
relationships with parents and/or a
key person.
Enabling Environment: The
environment plays a key role in
supporting and extending children’s
development and learning.
Learning and Developing: Children
develop and learn in different ways
and at different rates and all areas
of Learning and Development are
equally important and
interconnected.
By April 2012 a
revised EYFS will
government,
and this will be
implemented by
September 2012
